Singapore Nurses Day: Show Our Respect and Recognition for Nurses and Other Frontline Health Workers
1st August marks the beginning of the development of nursing in Singapore, so Singapore celebrates Nurses’ Day on 1 August, unlike other countries that celebrate it on 12th May, the birthday of Florence Nightingale.
This year, our OncoCare Cancer Centre colleagues shared a red cake in their green uniforms. Look at their smiles behind masks! On this day, the Novena Heart Centre teams were too busy to have any celebration, and they did not even have time to take a group photo.
We would like to take this opportunity to show our respect and recognition for nurses and other frontline health workers in Luye family.
Luye Medical Celebrated Chinese Doctors’ Day by Showcasing Doctors’ Stories
The word “doctor” is more than a job. It is also a responsibility, a choice, a belief, and more.
19th August marked the fifth Chinese Doctors' Day, and we are here to showcase a stage for five doctors who have dedicated their passion and lives in hope to bring a better future for all. A spotlight to their stories in the limelight to respect the heroes of this noble profession and put inspire those who want to pursue a career in medicine:
Dr. Jessie Ma
Director of Plastic and Cosmetic Medical Affairs, New Hong Qiao Project
I am a plastic surgeon and a medical person who explores and advances with both heritage and innovation. I have practiced medicine for nearly 30 years, and I am very pleased that I remain true to our original aspiration, that is, patients come first and be passionate for life.
I switched from plastic surgery to medical aesthetics; I believe both are like a “psychological surgery”, which not only change people’s appearance, but also sooth their soul. We cannot change the market, but rather than being driven by profit, we should be determined and try our best to bring self-confidence, beauty and hope for our patients.
For those who want to be doctors, I would like to say: Stay humble, be a lifetime learner and thinker. First, it is vital to constantly update professional knowledge in such a fast-changing industry; secondly, respect and curiosity can take you go further. By seeing, thinking, and communicating with excellent people, your will gain deeper understanding of the world and life, and then you will perceive beauty with your eyes and have faith in life at the bottom of your heart.
Dr. Cao Jing
Psychiatrist, Mindfront Shanghai Clinic
I chose to be a doctor because I like it; and being a doctor was my childhood dream which later came true.
There are many connections between patients and doctors, especially psychiatrists. We communicate deeply with people, and the experience taught me to put myself in other shoes. Most patients come to the doctor with their negative emotions, therefore I adjust my emotions and communicate with different people in different ways – I have really grown a lot.
In Mindfront Health, I feel like I am not fighting my battles all alone. We are a team, and we have a lot of communication and trainings together, including technology knowledge and doctor-patient scenarios. Whatever challenges we may face, our team works together to get things done.
A doctor is never too old to learn, and constantly takes big and small exams. If you keep enrich and improve yourself, such as laying a solid medical foundation and learning a foreign language, doing scientific research, and teaching, you will do better.
Dr. Jiang Pingyin
Vice President, Yantai Huayi Rehabilitation Hospital
I am a doctor of rehabilitation medicine, and I serve my patients wholeheartedly like all the doctors in the world. For sixteen years in the rehab business, I have kept up the habit of running. Trust me, exercise is the best medicine.
To me, this job led to both personal and professional development. There is a saying that “the patients come, lying down; the patients go, standing up". Every time I see the grateful patients and their families, I am very excited, and feel that all the efforts are worth it.
Huayi Rehabilitation Hospital is young, and its achievements today could not have been achieved without our joint efforts. I have grown a lot and gained a great sense of achievement in my workplace, because of both the sense of accomplishment and the great opportunities for growth offered by the group. Growing up in a team with good cultural values, I feel more motivation of self-realization.
Rehabilitation is a career that can be very fulfilling because you are always needed by a lot of people; rehabilitation is also a huge blue ocean. If you want to be a doctor, you must have professional ability and professional ethics, as well as good communication skills. In addition to curing diseases and saving people, social responsibilities such as education is necessary, too. In short, you should have both helpful hands and heart.
Dr. Zhu Cheng
Psychiatrist, Mindfront Guangzhou Caring Clinic
My undergraduate major was clinical medicine, and I chose to study psychiatry at the postgraduate level. As a psychiatrist, I found that patients suffer a lot from both mental health illness and misunderstanding, or even stigma that prevents them from getting the help they need. To keep their work and life peaceful, some patients will tell others that they are taking antihypertensive or hypoglycemic drugs, not psychotropic drugs.
What impressed me deeply is that for patients, what doctors can do is limited; and effective treatment depends on the cooperation of society, families, and doctors. I want to say: Anyone can get sick, either physically or mentally. If someone around us is feeling unwell, I hope we can be the soft net that supports them, not the straw that breaks the camel's back.
In China, there is still a serious lack of psychiatrists. For those who want to enter the clinical arena, on the one hand, I want to encourage them to pursue their dreams; on the other hand, I hope that they can think about how they can get well-prepared, and what they may face in the future; finally, I hope they know that doctors or medicine are not omnipotent so that they must keep learning and growing to deal with the constant pressure. If they are really determined to embark on this path, I wish them to stick to it, get what they want, and realize their worth.
Dr. Zhang Lin
Psychiatrist, Mindfront Xi'an Hospital
The mission of a psychiatrist is the same as that of all doctors - to save people and reduce their pain. The difference is that most doctors treat symptoms and diseases using drugs, radiation, or surgery, while psychiatry have more communication with patients, analyzing the reasons behind symptoms, and help them with drugs and psychotherapy.
When we successfully change people’s stereotype and work with them to solve the patient's problems, we feel very relieved that patients are recovering.
I want to say that mental illness is very common now, and the disease itself is not so terrible. It can be considered as an “emotional cold”. If the public has a better understanding of mental health problems, patients and families will be able to avoid detours and use the society's medical resources in a more proper way.
As a doctor, I have seen many kinds of patients and families troubled and injured by diseases; therefore, I think we should cherish health and have a few hobbies, so that you can take a break and overcome your negative emotions.
If you are interested in being a psychiatrist, then you must keep learning and updating your knowledge. It is indeed a hard job that requires great ability to withstand pressure, maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude; and when you face patients, their families, and a lot of tasks, you should always have patience. Then you are likely to keep growing and your years of hard work will pay off.
Hope you enjoy reading these doctors’ powerful, inspiring true stories which will probably remind you why you decided to study medicine and respect doctors.
